the former residence of zhao shiyan is a key cultural relic protection unit of china, the second batch of national patriotic education base, the national classical revolution tourism scenic area, and aaaa national tourist attraction. located in longtan town, youyang tujia and miao autonomous county in chongqing, it is 30km away from the urban area of youyang, which presents revolutionary culture and ancient architectural art.
the former residence of zhao shiyan is composed of six major parts, namely, the former residence of zhao shiyan, martyr zhao shiyan’s memorial hall, martyr zhao shiyan’s memorial square, tourist center, ecological parking lot and green area, which was built on an area of 11,800m2 with a floor area of 2,670m2.
formerly known as zhao’s manor, the former residence of zhao shiyan was built in the 28th year of guangxu’s reign of the qing dynasty (in 1902), which was a wooden quadrangle taking up an area of 1,605m2. the quadrangle was built on an area of 712m2. it has 32 tile roofed houses, a big gate, “blessing” and “longevity” engraved on the left and right screens forcefully. above the gate hung a horizontal inscribed board reading “family of purity and honest”.on the screen wall facing the gate painted pines and cranes. in november 1982, deng xiaoping inscribed the words “former residence of zhao shiyan”, which was inscribed on gilded plate and hung above the gate of “former residence”.
born on may 30, 1901, zhao shiyan was one of the founders of the communist party of china and a famous revolutionary martyrs. zhao shiyan studied diligently since his childhood and studied in beiping higher normal school affiliated middle school in august 1915. he studied abroad in france in 1919 and convened the founding meeting of chinese youth communist party in june 1922 in paris and was elected as the secretary. he was the major principal of chinese communist party general branch in europe with zhou enlai. in 1923, he studied in oriental university in moscow and returned to china the next year to serve as the secretary of beijing committee of communist party of china. in the first domestic revolutionary war, he led three workers armed uprising that shocked the world with zhou enlai and luo yinong. in 1926, he was transferred to be the minister of jiangsu-zhejiang regional committee of communist party of china and the secretary of communist party and communist youth league of shanghai federation of trade unions. in may 1927, he served as one of the five members of central party committee of china. in june, he served as the secretary of jiangsu committee of communist party of china. in july 1927, he was arrested and killed.
